Abstract
Bronchiectasis is an uncommon disease with the potential to cause devastating illness.1 Although fewer than 100 cases of bronchiectasis associated with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency have been reported there is little doubt of an association between bronchiectasis and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency.2,3,4 Aim of the present study was to determine the level of alpha-1-antitrypsin activity in case of bronchiectasis patients. The method that was adopted in the present study of serum alpha-1-antitrypsin activity was by measuring the inhibition of trypsin by serum. The serum alpha-1-antitrypsin level was found to be 2.46 + 0.21 mg/ml among the control group, which lies in the normal range. The serum alpha-1-antitrypsin level was found to be 2.40 + 0.10 mg/ml among thirty one bronchiectasis patients, which also lies in the normal range.
Key Words: proteinase inhibitor; serpin superfamily; neutrophil elastase; bronchiectasis.
